In a country that keeps secrets and buries sins, a stranger learns the price of both.

In the remote Andean village of Colibrí, a boy discovers what appears to be the body of an angel. But in the face and wounds of the dead, winged woman, Dr. Gregory Moreno sees something even more disturbing an uncanny resemblance to his beloved late wife that cannot be mere chance. And in American anthropologist Sophie Lawson, still more echoes of the doctor’s lost love stir…igniting the superstitions of the townspeople, and an elusive killer’s deepest desires and despair.

When Sophie vanishes, her son and Dr. Moreno must navigate the streets, politics, and mysteries of a place where tortured ghosts and strange omens exist side by side with mortals both devout and corrupt. But they may need nothing less than a miracle to save her from sacrifice at the altar of a madman’s twisted passion.

Conjuring shades of Gabriel García Márquez, Isabel Allende, or even Neil Gaiman, Grave of Hummingbirds is a mesmerizing novel of dreams and demons, beauty and blood.

Grave of Hummingbirds edition by Jennifer Skutelsky Literature Fiction eBooks

Atmospheric and haunted, Grave of Hummingbirds is a beautifully written mystery in the loosest sense of the term. It follows in the writing tradition of the best South American authors in its use of mood, myth and tradition. The use of animal imagery is portrayed in stunning fashion: the fated horse, the condor and the puma. The author uses these devices to help move her plot along and tell the story of an impoverished people falling back on their old gods.

The addition of Sophie and Finn into this story provided a nice twist. I really enjoyed Finn's character. He was rebellious and adventurous, but not in a cliched way. Eager to continue his ballet studies, he finds himself entangled in the ways of the small Andean town he and his mother have come to visit. He possess a way with animals that is both touching and integral to the story. There is a scene where he follows a puma down a trail that is beautifully written and integral to the novel. I only wish that maybe we had a better idea of why he had this special ability.

Skutesky does an admirable job of bringing these small town characters to life. Nita, the dead woman every male seems to cover, is probably the biggest character in this novel, despite the fact that she's passed away. Gregory frets over his dead wife, believing that she had kept something from him. While he still pines for her, as do the other males in town, he lacks closure. Until a dead woman is discovered who closely resembles his beloved Nita.

Traditions, corruption, love and love lost resonate strongly throughout Hummingbirds. The sacrifice lovers make--or do not make---for their children define their happiness. Secrets abound and destroy perceptions, causing the victims to do the unthinkable. Grave of Hummingbirds is a stunning novel that will leave you wondering.

Grave of Hummingbirds edition by Jennifer Skutelsky Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

GRAVE OF HUMMINBIRDS is a compelling narrative by author Jennifer Skutelsky. It is, to me, a great work of literary fiction, although it has strong elements of mystery and suspense.

The book has an exceptionally strong hook in that a young boy in the Andean mountain village of Colibri discovers the dead body of an angel. It's a bold way to open a novel, but it works in numerous ways as the plot develops. This discovery provides a strong foundation for the rest of the novel, a textured narrative in which all of the subplots fit together with amazing harmony.

It is very difficult for any author to frequently switch narrative POV with such a rich cast of characters, but Skutelsky accomplishes this seamlessly. After we see Dr. Gregory Moreno examine the fallen angel, we are quickly introduced to anthropologist Sophie and her son Finn. These characters (and the rest) are very well drawn and three-dimensional, merging with the opening scenes with Dr. Moreno as the narrative progresses. I especially liked Finn, a ballet student back in the States. He display appropriate "attitude" while also showing genuine concern when his mother disappears.

This is a novel of magic, hope, love, mysteries, and tragic loss. It has beautiful imagery--the animal imagery alone is executed with consummate skill--and the author has chosen the perfect setting to bring these elements together. The action takes place in a remote location, but the novel addresses universal themes that one may bring into the wider world, and that includes a political statement that is artfully woven into the narrative.

The book is beautifully written and has lyrical, sumptuous prose. It was a joy to find such great writing on every page. The novel is relatively short, and despite addressing so many motifs, the narrative moves quickly, keeping the reader engaged for the duration. Highly recommended.
An odd, slightly haunting literary novel set in a remote Andean mountain village. It's a murder mystery of sorts that features a controversial cultic ceremony and a community of simple (I think disfunctional) villagers. The narrative borders at times on magical realism but it's really more a psychological vision pov from characters experiencing tremendous trauma. Again, odd and not a simple straightforward story. After the climax, which was a nice reveal, the author added unnecessary exposition explaining the political history of the village. This totally broke from the style of the rest of the novel and seemed an intrusion of research into her efforts at being literary. If you want something to read that's fairly different, this is okay, but for most mystery readers this will be a struggle I think.
